I'd already written out this lesson beforehand and had it saved on Psiworld, but when the forum got hacked I lost it, so I am going to rewrite it now. It probably won't be as good or comprehensible as it was last time, but bear with me, OK?
I assume that you all know what scanning is, but just in case you didn't, it is basically just searching a particular area (a place, a begin, etc.) for a given thing (be it an object, information or what have you).
Like I said in Lesson 8, I recommend the linking method of scanning for newbies, so that is what I will talk about first. Using this method, scanning is basically just forming a link to your target area, and being able to perceive the target through the link to get the desired information.
To begin, let's create the link. As I told you in the previous lesson, a scanning link is a little different from either an empathic or a telepathic link. This is because I generally form links for scanning purposes by connecting to a person's energy signature.
(For those of you who have no idea what I'm now talking about, an energy signature is basically a sort of psi fingerprint. They are unique to each person, place, and thing in this universe. Being very personal to your target, it is much easier to connect to these than to the target directly.)
So see if you can find the target's energy signature using the following technique. Anything related to the target is laced with their energy signature. If they are a person, you can find their energy signature through their name or a picture of them, their phone number or e-mail address, words they have typed, etc. If they are a place or a thing, just visualize the place or read a description of the thing (for example) and you will be able to find their energy signature.
There are two main ways I connect with their energy signature. If I am connecting to, for example, a photo of them or something else visible, I will often just sort of feel myself moving into that photo or extending into it, and then a sort of invisible energy link expanding outward from myself into and through the place, until I am completely connected to the photo/place. Otherwise, if I am connecting to an energy sig through words or numbers or something similar, I will usually do so by visualizing a chain of energy extending from both me and the name/numbers, and the two energy chains entwining to form one link. Information will then pass between us on the link.
Of course, if this energy signature linking seems too "ambiguous" for you, or if you just don't like it, you can still just link directly with them as you did in empathy and telepathy. I just find it a little easier to do energy-sig linking with scanning, and direct linking with everything else. But, you can use whatever you want to.
Remember, a link can be made with any target over any distance, so it is pretty much just as easy to link with the e-mail address of a friend who lives across the world from you, as it is to link with a photo of your neighbor. However, as a general rule, the farther away the target is then the more energy you need to put into the link to make it strong enough and durable enough to work properly.
Once you have formed a link with the target's energy sig through whatever means you choose to, you simply have to express your intent through the link. Focus your mind on whatever it is you are scanning for. For example, let's try it now. Go and get a book that you've never read before, or have read but don't remember. Before you open it, create a link to it and scan it to get a general idea of what it's about. If you don't get a good mental idea or are unsure, begin asking questions through the link. Whatever feels right after you ask a question is almost always the correct answer.
Once you have a good idea of what you think the book is about, be sure to close the link (as always). Visualize it slowly squeezing shut and fading away, until you are separate again. Then open your eyes, open the book, skim through it, and see if the general idea you got through scanning actually matches (at least to a point) what the book is really about. If so, great work! If not, that's OK too, it just means you need to refine my technique and get some more practice.
Remember, this is a very basic lesson on scanning. Once you are very good at this, you can scan simply by thinking about it without using a link. As you practice, your scanning results will get more detailed and more accurate. As always, all it takes is practice.
If you have any questions or want to learn about more advanced scanning techniques (like scanning without linking), then contact me or post at the Help Desk.
HOMEWORK: Just practice scanning! Remember to start out small. Then, if you want to try out long-distance scanning, feel free to contact me or most anyone else on this site and ask them if they mind if you try and scan them. Then you can get a general idea of what they look like, contact them, and see if your mental picture was correct.
