Well, what with the transfer to a whole new site (our shiny new Academy!), all the chaos now going on over at Psiworld, new students trying to catch up, etc. this lesson has been long overdue! So for those of you who have been patiently waiting for this sixth lesson, thank you.
I assume most everyone here already has at least an idea of what telepathy is, but I always start my lessons with a definition, so here it is: "Telepathy is the psychic transfer of thoughts, concepts, images, sounds, and feelings."
That's sort of a long list, hmm? So what exactly can telepathy transfer? Well, theoretically, it can send pretty much any form of information to anybody, anywhere. However, in practice, while it is possible to telepathically ping someone with a twenty-page-long string of mathematical code, the transfer will probably be terrible.
Why would that twenty-page string of code be received less accurately than, for example, the receiving of an image of your dog that you sent to your friend? Two reasons. One, that string of code is incredibly long and would be nigh impossible to hold accurately and completely in your head while sending. Two, that long, impersonal string of numbers has no emotion attached to it and uses only one sense: sight. The best telepathic transmissions are caused when you send something using lots of senses.
A better example is that image of your dog above. Imagine: It was a cool autumn afternoon, not cold but not incredibly hot either. You are relaxing on your deck as you watch your cute little puppy romp around in the moist grass and dive in and out of once-neat piles of multicolored leaves. The backyard still smells faintly of the rain that fell last night, but it is not an unpleasant smell; in fact, it is a very calm, soothing, almost tranquil smell.
Your puppy dives into a larger pile of leaves and immediately begins to bark and yelp because he is sliding into it and cannot get a foothold. Laughing, you walk down and gently lift him out of the leaves, holding him up above your head and nuzzling his warm furry body with your head.
In that moment, when you are cuddling with your puppy, you undoubtedly feel very, very happy. Trying to send an image of your puppy right then would send a whole tapestry of feelings and emotions. The receiver would feel the breeze on his face, would actually smell that faint scent of rain, would feel the warm softness of your puppy's fur ... he would be completely immersed in that scene you were sending him.
So, for more detailed, accurate telepathy, focus on an entire situation rather than on a specific word, image, or phrase.
Now that all that is over with, let's get on to the actual process of telepathic sending. First, in my experience, it is best to create a link. You will do this much the same as creating an empathic link. First, focus your thoughts on the target person, visualizing them in your mind and concentrating only on them until a clear image forms. Then allow yourself to visualize the situation they are in. Imagine the sounds, smells, emotions, and atmosphere surrounding them until your mental image becomes even clearer and more realistic. Only now do you open the link itself (by visualizing an energy link stretching between you and your target person). As last time, continue to divert energy into the link until it feels strong.
In telepathy, you should also realize that a link will not always work. The target person will not always consciously know when you are connecting with them via energy link, but will still respond subconsciously. He or she may block you out if upset with you. The sender cannot force accurate telepathy; it only works when the sender and receiver both allow it.
This is why telepathy should always be done with compassion for the other person's thoughts and feelings. You may learn personal information. If you betray this trust, future connections will be more difficult.
Also, as you explore someone else's mind through this link, you will find that people have different "levels" of thought. The easiest level to reach is that of surface thought, the daily conscious thinking that people do in response to their environment. This level is usually the least useful for telepathic communication, but the easiest for people to receive from. Surface thoughts are easier to read because they are broadcast physically. Have you ever had the experience, when talking with a friend, that you both say exactly the same thing at the same time? This is because one of you is "thinking loudly", almost verbalizing their surface thoughts by thinking about them so openly. So the conscious level of thinking is the most open, and by far the easiest to send to and receive from.
Exploring a person's thoughts is like wandering a complex maze. This maze is their life. Past and present experiences are mixed with thoughts, daydreams, feelings, and pictures. Navigating through the maze for one specific idea can be confusing, but it will get easier with practice.
Thoughts and memories are related by similarity, so you should begin by telepathically asking for a starting point relevant to the information you want. Some images will undoubtedly appear. Watch for details in them. Focus on ideas related to the information you want. When new images appear, they will bring more information. Focus in closer until you get to the level of details you need. If certain information you want isn't presented, ask a question about it. ("Show me more about your notebook. What have you written in it?") Follow the ideas that associate usefully with other ideas. You will eventually find a path to the information you want.
You can also send information along a telepathic link. To do this, I generally concentrate on a specific situation. I visualize it racing down the link and completely surrounding the other person until they are immersed in this situation. If I am not sending a situation, it is much the same: I simply visualize the word, number, image, etc. racing down the link, entering the person's mind, then sort of expanding and filling their mind until that is all they can think about.
Remember, after you are finished, you should close the link (just as in empathy). To do this, visualize it slowly, carefully, gently squeezing shut and just fading away into nothingness.
HOMEWORK: As always, practice practice practice!!! Before you post here, I want you to be able to create and strengthen a telepathic link, receive or send through the link with detailed and accurate images, and be able to close the link easily without harming either of you.
BTW: After this lesson is over with, expect the arrival of Lesson 6.5 (ugh, another half-lesson?!?!) dealing with telepathic suggestion, which is tied in closely to this sort of telepathy but, in my opinion, is a different enough concept to need another separate article.
