True Goths are always intellectual. Considering Shelly, Lovecraft and Gaiman are almost considered required goth reading, you must be intelligent to read it...
Don't tell me an idiot can read this: "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. "
A passage from H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu."
It takes an extensive vocabulary just to grasp the basic meaning of the first paragraph of this short story, let alone to read the whole thing. And this is one of the most popular writers amongst the gothic community!
Don't think for a moment that anyone who is goth could ever be considered stupid or ignorant even by the most ludicrous of standards set by men who lack the barest notion of sanity.

Gah no please not reading! *falls to knees* Its my weakness! No but seriously I hate reading. You can be intelligent without being able to read things like that though and not all goths are smart. My friend who is a goth skips school 3/4 of the year and picks fights on a daily basis and he doesnt have much of a vocabulary. He keeps to the simple 5 letter words lol!
btw I would rather have a girl that I like for who she is rather than a snobby smart girl or a preppy hot chick. If she is hot then that is just one helluva bonus!

Then he isn't goth, more likely punk. Sadly, most people who apply the label goth to themselves are not even remotely goth.
And, you are correct, disliking reading does not mean you are unintelligent. But that is not what I said. I said that if you can read things such as this and derive enjoyment you must be intelligent, not that you aren't if you don't.

He is goth believe me on that. He has the goth attitude. He has the goth look. He writes poetry, decent poetry and draws incredibly dark pictures, but he is dumb as hell!

If he is constantly getting into fights, he does not have the "goth attitude." And writing poetry and drawing dark pictures does not make you goth...
You know, this is getting annoying...
I will explain what goth is then...
First, Goth subculture can most easily be described as a variation on romanticism with emphasis on tolerance, and the ability to see beauty in everything. As such, many things not normally talked about in mainstream culture (death, despair, magick, etc) are in goth culture. Another way to define goth is anti mainstream. Everything that was ever goth, was never a part of mainstream culture.
Now, Punk is similar to goth, but not at all the same. The easiest way to compare them would be like this. The movie Saw is punk, while the movie Frankenstine. Both involve death and both have grotesque images. But one is much more gory and repulsive. While the other has themes of loss, sadness, inante benevolence, playing god and revenge.
See, one is more of a physical experiance, and the other mental, emotional and philosophical. And, for future refference, wearing all black and chains does not make you goth.

Remember it's not what on the outside counts, it's what matters in the inside.

I didn't mean it like that stolide. I meant the stereotype of emo's not Goths. Goth's are ok with me. And i really enjoy that book

I know what goth is stolide and I know what punk is. My friend is goth I know that much and he has characteristics that dont completely fit "goth" but he is still goth. The characteristics that are different though put him on the verge of emo though lol.
I gotta stop this now. Trying to recall past memories with him is starting to creep me out. *shudders*

Yeah. You guys need to consider that it's not what somebody looks like. Honestly. Even if someone is...less than pretty, it's not their fault (well, if it's plastic surgery or something that's a different story). There are different kinds of beauty, not just one kind of superficial/surface beauty. Cheesy as it sounds, it really is what's on the inside that counts. That second photo was mad photoshopped anyways.

I just got to say thanks for this guys, i actually fell off my chair laughing at this stuff. Stolide, I think labels like goth, punk, emo, etc. aren't defined as clearly now. I mean, for all you know seraphs friend could be a goth. perhaps where he is (indiana, right?) all goth's are like that.

Personally, I don't believe labels for a specific group of people are really that accurate...Everyone is unique thus specifying them to a single category would be really hard. Also, I LOVE high contrast make up, but the piercing has to go...

I met the most beautiful girl today. Brown eyes, brown hair, absolutely stunning. She was wicked nice, and to top it all off she was goofy enough to be amazing. She didn't seem dumb in the slightest. I think I have a serious crush... which is bad, because I'm trying to be celibate. HELP!!!! AHHH!!! Anyways, back on topic, I think that beautiful is something that is defined on a person to person basis. Beautiful is being good looking whether your covered in trash, just woke up, or haven't taken a shower in a week. Someone who thinks someone else is beautiful will think all that. Its like that one dude said, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." And, in answer to the question, yes I think emo girls are hot. As long as there not too emo.

Lol... I know exactly what you are saying Tooth.
And stormrider, that's what goth does, it says that people that think like this and like these things are goth. It's not innacurate. Thats like saying that people that read scifi books and watch scifi tv shows and love scifi movies are scifi fans. Thats all it is.

There are a lot of hot girls. Period. End of story. Just because you are Emo/Scene/Preppy/Goth doesn't make you pretty. It's facial features and other things. Although I do find some piercings and tattoos very sexy.
